Cheap and cheerful things to do around home this holiday season
With the holiday season in full swing, it's the time of year where you've probably spent some considerable time and money celebrating with your loved ones. Not everything you do over the busy holiday period needs to be expensive, though, and there are some cheap and cheerful things you can do around home whether you're hanging out with housemates, your family, or organising a holiday get together with friends. Here's our list of cheap and cheerful things you can do around home this holiday season.
Pool party
If you're fortunate enough to have a pool at your home or in your apartment building (seriously, lucky you!), you could host a pool party for some friends and family. The casual nature of pool parties makes them an inexpensive way for everyone to get together for some quality time while they cool off with a swim. You could even have a barbecue and get everyone to make their favourite summer salad.
Board game Olympics
With the sun shining bright outside, it might be too warm on some days for backyard cricket or a run. Instead, bring out your competitive side with a board game Olympics party. You can pick a few of your favourite board games (or ask your friends to bring their favourite board game too) and enjoy some healthy competition.
Get lost in a book
While it gets busy at times, the holiday period is also an excellent time to relax and recharge. If you've got some time spare, pick up one of those books in the pile that's been building up all year (we've all got one of those piles). You could even organise for a few of your friends to read the same book and start a summer book club to discuss the book later.
Make something from scratch
Whether it's baking a recipe you've been waiting for the try or that slow cooker meal for a Sunday dinner, try your hand at making a recipe from scratch. Not only is cooking a wonderful way to de-stress but buying all the ingredients to cook a meal goes a lot further than another meal out at a restaurant.
Movie marathon
If you're ready for a day on the couch after all the holiday festivities (and you're sick of the cricket!), why not host a movie marathon for you and some friends? With all the streaming services available today, there are thousands of movies available at your fingertips. Bonus — get everyone to bring their favourite movie snack to share.
The holidays can be a stressful and busy time, but giving yourself the space to enjoy some low-key, inexpensive activities around the home will give you the opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones without breaking the bank.
